At Mahwelereng Centre Of Hope, the NGO tries to make sure that we follow the National Education Policy, 1996 (No. 27 of 1996) National Policy on HIV/AIDS, for disabled learners. HIV/AIDS stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. It is an infectious disease caused by a virus. Over time the virus attacks and destroys the body’s immune system. HIV/Aids Spreads Through contact of mucous membranes or openings in the skin with infected blood and body fluids that contain blood, semen and cervical discharges. Breastfeeding, dirty needles or sharp instruments. Mother passes to infant before birth, sexual contact.
HIV/AIDS doesn’t spread through the type of contact that occurs in childcare and school settings such as touching, hugging, playing, feeding or by contact with surfaces touched by infected people. It is not spread by saliva, tears, urine or kissing.
The main aim of providing this knowledge about HIV/AIDS is to prevent the spread of HIV infection, to allay excessive fears of the epidemic, to reduce the stigma attached to it and to instill non-discriminatory attitudes towards persons with HIV/AIDS. This education should ensure that learners and students acquire agenda context-appropriate knowledge and skills in order that they may adopt and maintain behavior that will protect them from HIV infection.
Your and your child’s HIV / AIDS status is private and confidential and as such does not need to be disclosed to Mahwelereng Centre of Hope.
We aim to create an environment where families feel comfortable and supported in voluntarily disclosing their HIV / AIDS status to Mahwelereng Centre of Hope should they want to.
Each learner will be treated with the same caution where open wounds or blood are involved, so that children and staff are safe at all times.
Mahwelereng Centre of Hope follows a strict adherence to universal precautions under all circumstances in the creche.
Learners who contract other communicable illnesses such as measles, chicken pox, whooping cough and mumps must be kept at home to protect both teachers and other learners who may have a weaker immune system.
HIV / AIDS education is integrated into our lessons about personal hygiene and wellness, rather than separated as a once-off learning topic.
Mahwelereng Centre of Hope does and will not discriminate against children, guardians or staff who may have HIV / AIDS. We expect parents and visitors to respect and follow this commitment.
